the last keeper - the hum of what we’ve yet to protect

“The Last Keeper” is a striking charcoal drawing, capturing a bee caught in a moment of delicate resilience. Strong backlighting silhouettes its blurred wings — a visual cue to its tireless flight — casting a soft halo against a deep, shadowed background. The resulting contrast speaks to both fragility and reverence, evoking a quiet urgency. More than a study in motion and form, this piece becomes a somber tribute to one of the planet’s most vital, yet increasingly endangered, pollinators. The title is a deliberate double entendre — evoking the role of the beekeeper, but also reminding us that this small, tireless being is something we must keep, protect, and never take for granted. This contrast between light and shadow, movement and stillness, speaks to the delicate balance bees maintain in our world.
Rendered in rich charcoal on gessoed, stretched canvas, the medium adds texture and depth, reinforcing the raw emotional weight behind this fading symbol of balance and life.

“Never Look Back” captures the raw energy and urgency of survival as a lone zebra charges forward, hooves kicking up a swirling cloud of dust.
